Local DAR member receives national award for presentation

Barbara Hug, a member of the Daughters of the American Legion Grinnell Chapter, has been awarded first place in the National Bicentennial War of 1812 Proclamation contest in Washington, D.C.

Hug prepared a power point presentation, program and proclamation titled “The War of 1812, America’s Forgotten War, The Second War of Independence” commemorating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. Her project goal was to create an awareness of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and to educate and give back knowledge about the war.

Hug presented her program to the Grinnell Chapter, the Jasper County Genealogical Society and Jasper County Historical Society. Her presentation gives a brief history of the war and provides a local tie to the war’s history by honoring War of 1812 veterans buried in both Jasper and Poweshiek counties.
