Cards open season seventh at Indianola
INDIANOLA — It’s always tough to gauge a season by the very first contest, and that’s where the Newton boys golf team found itself after its first meet of the season Monday afternoon.
Shooting a 338, the Cardinals took seventh out of the nine-team field at an invitational at Indianola Country Club that featured multiple district opponents. Southeast Polk took overall team honors with a 303.
“I’m not disappointed. We’ve got a tough district and I actually foresee this being our worst score of the year,” Newton coach Pat Riley said. “There are a lot of kids that didn’t play as much as they should have this summer, so it’ll just take some time for them to get their swings back. When I first took over, I would’ve begged for scores in the 330s.”
