Van Zee: ‘I can’t go in direction city administrator wants to lead city’

Wednesday afternoon, Newton City Attorney Darrin Hamilton gave the green light to release former Director of Administrative Services Candice Van Zee’s letter of resignation to the City Council.

In it, she expressed her appreciation to the council and the citizens of Newton for the opportunity to serve the community. She has worked for the city since August of 2000.

“It is evident changes are going to be made, (and) it is my understanding there is the possibility I would be given the opportunity to apply for the position of Executive Assistant/City Clerk,” she wrote. “There is no way that I can be Executive Assistant to the City Administrator. Therefore, it is in my best interest to resign now, as I cannot and will not be a part of what is trying to be implemented by the City Administrator.”
