 to two NHS students

Two Newton Senior High School students recently received Arion Awards, the oldest and most prestigious national award for outstanding achievement by high school musicians in band, orchestra and chorus. Selection for this honor is based on the student’s individual contribution to his or her musical organization, scholastic standing, musicianship, performing ability and demonstration of personal qualities in keeping with the school’s standards.

The custom of bestowing valuable gifts on outstanding musicians goes back more than 2,000 years to the time of Arion. Mythology tells us that this legendary poet and musician lived about 625 B.C. Arion was the most popular musician of his time and he was showered with precious gifts wherever he went.

Danielle (Dani) Peters was the recipient of the vocal student Arion Award, while Leann Peterson was the recipient of the band student award. The Newton Noon Kiwanis presents this award each year to two NHS students.
