Committee recommends
demolition of EH fort

After months of the Newton Community School District Board of Education examining the Emerson Hough playground fort and deliberating on next steps, no further action has been done in the matter other than deeming the structure unsafe and putting up a cautionary orange fence and “no trespassing” signs. But action could be taken soon, as the board decided at its regular meeting Monday night to consider demolition of the fort at the next meeting.

“What do y’all want to do with this playground?” board president Donna Cook asked to start the conversation.

“Knock it down,” board member Nat Clark said. “It presents an inherent safety risk.”
