Edward A. “Ed” Barton, 65, of Newton died on Monday, July 16, 2012, under the care of Skiff Hospice at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight, July 18, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Memorials to the Freedom Flight Fund may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.

Ed, the son of Earl Wayne and Alyce (Pyle) Barton, was born on Nov. 23, 1946 in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1965. Ed served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was united in marriage with Amy Lewis on Jan. 28, 1976, in Monroe. They made their home in Killduff, Iowa, from 1978-1999, when they moved to Newton. Ed worked as a Working Foreman for the Maytag Company in Newton for 36 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of the UAW Local 997. Ed was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching NASCAR and attending races at the Iowa Speedway.

Those left to honor Ed’s memory are his wife, Amy Barton of Newton; two sons, Chad (Justene Staver) Barton of Newton and Jason (Bonnie) Barton of Newton; his five grandchildren, Taylor, Hailey, Mackenzie, Bentley and Kaleb Barton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Elaine (Don) Keuning of Monroe, Jeff (Lana) Lewis of Pleasant Hill, Ned (Connie) Lewis of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Marty (Joyce) Lewis of Monroe; his mother-in-law, Gwyneth Lewis of Monroe; grandmother-in-law, Thelma Lewis of Newton; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Doug Barton; and father-in-law, Rodger Lewis.
