Single-vehicle accident kills 65-year-old Baxter resident late Wednesday night
A single-vehicle accident near Baxter Wednesday night killed the driver of a small truck after it slid into the ditch and collided with the embankment at the intersection of West 68th Street North and North 107th Avenue.
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office reported today that 65-year-old Donnell Lee Johnston of Baxter was pronounced dead at the scene by the Baxter emergency rescue crew following the 10:11 p.m. accident. Investigators said that gravel impressions at the scene indicated Johnston was traveling southbound and failed to stop at a stop sign as he attempted to turn east at the intersection.
The marks showed Johnston’s 1996 Chevy S10 swerved wide to the west then to the east side of the road trying to make the turn. The slide marks led to the ditch.
