Maytag Bowl project receives $25,000 historic resources development grant
The City of Newton has been awarded a grant in the amount of $25,000 in support of the Maytag Bowl repair project, City Administrator Bob Knabel announced in his weekly report this morning.
According to the report, Maytag Park was eligible for the grant through the REAP/Historic Resources Development Program (HRDP) because it has a historic preservation commission and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Iowa had 86 hopefuls apply for the grant, only 26 of whom were awarded grant money. The Newton City Council endorsed the grant application during its May 7 meeting.
City of Newton Development Planner Erin Chambers played a large role in the securing the money, the report stated, because she “attended a state workshop on the process, stayed in close communication with state officials, wrote the application text and compiled the necessary documentation.”
