MAT wins national tumbling championship

Marshalltown-based MAT Tumbling/Trampoline/Gymnastics recently traveled to Madison, Wis., for the United States Tumbling & Trampoline Association National Championships — a 5-day event in late June. Dozens of power tumbling teams from across the U.S. made the trip, and at the end of the competition, the MAT team was crowned champion.

MAT took 54 of its team members to compete in tumbling, trampoline and double-mini trampoline. Many of the athletes that competed are from Jasper County. While in Madison, the team competed against 160 USTA clubs from across the nation. Over 1,900 competitors were in attendance.

All of the MAT team members performed very well individually, with most making the podium with top 10 finishes. This was a difficult accomplishment, with several of the leveled age groups having as many as 60 competitors. The MAT Nationals team claimed eight separate team awards in this year’s competition. Those events and placings were: Elite girls tumbling (open age group division) — first place; Intermediate girls double-mini trampoline — first place; Advanced girls double-mini trampoline — second place, Advanced Beginner girls tumbling — second place; Sub-novice girls tumbling — third place; Advanced girls tumbling — first place.
