Values, mutual respect powerful tools to help eliminate bullying
Once again, the subject of bullying in schools has become a hot topic of discussion. Every one of us can remember being pushed around or bullied in some way during our childhoods. While most folks overcome such experiences and become stronger as a result, there have been situations where the bullying clearly has gone too far.
Unfortunately, bullying has expanded, keeping pace with recent advancements in technology. Back in the day, being shoved on the playground or called an insulting name was about the extent of it. Many of us grew up with these adages: “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me,” “turn the other cheek” and “never start a fight but if someone else picks a fight with you, feel free to finish it.” While simple rules rarely solve complicated problems, those statements functioned fairly well in most situations with youngsters for many years.
However, in today’s society, fights often escalate far beyond a one-on-one skirmish resulting in a black eye or a chipped tooth. Today, many do not understand the real danger of fighting or of various weapons. A fundamental respect for human life seems to have gradually eroded away somewhat, even in the very young.
