100 mph chase ends in Polk County after pursuit through Newton

A Newton man was released on bond from the Jasper County Jail at noon Saturday following a high-speed chase through Newton that ended with his arrest in Polk County.
The Newton Police Department reported this afternoon that Skyler J. Bergis, 20, was apprehended by the Iowa State Patrol at the intersection of US Highways 65 and 117 after evading police. Officials said Bergis reached speeds in excess of 100 mph during the chase that began at 6:06 a.m. in the 1400 block of First Avenue West. A Newton officer attempted a traffic stop when it was observed that Bergis was not wearing a seat belt.
According to the report, the driver turned north onto West 11th Street North, running several stop signs until he escaped the officer's field of vision. State troopers said that Bergis was apprehended after his vehicle ran out of gas.
Burgis faces multiple charges, including eluding an officer, driving while license barred, four counts of driving while license suspended, six citations for failing to obey a stop sign and driving on the wrong side of the highway. A spokesperson for the jail said today that Bergis posted a $7,600 bond.
