The Newton softball team was a heavy favorite in its first regional playoff game — a 12-2 win over Grinnell last Thursday.

On Saturday, the Cardinals were more of an underdog. Making the long trip to take on host Vinton-Shellsburg in Vinton, Newton (21-11) edged the Vikettes (28-13) by a score of 2-0, advancing to the Class 4A Regional finals.

The Cardinals will take on No. 2 Dallas Center-Grimes (32-5) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Colfax-Mingo High School, with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Fort Dodge.
