Newton man facing domestic assault charges after allegedly abusing wife
A Newton man who allegedly grabbed his wife by the throat and hit her head against the cab side of a car windshield was released from the Jasper County Jail on his own recognizance this week.
Stan R. Hopwood, 45, of Newton was located and arrested at 1205 W. 19th St. S. Monday after leaving the scene of the domestic assault Sunday night. According to a spokesperson from the Newton Police Department, officers were called to 1734 W. Fourth St. N. at 9:18 p.m. Sunday regarding alleged abuse. The 39-year-old victim reportedly told officers that Hopwood left their residence after the incident inside the vehicle and later returned to get belongings. She said her husband returned a third time and grabbed her neck again, pushing her to the floor.
During an initial appearance in Jasper County District Court Tuesday, Judge Thomas Mott issued a no-contact order against Hopwood that effectively prohibits him from initiating any type of interaction with the victim until Jan. 2, 2013.
