Powerful storm hits Jasper County Friday

Many Jasper County residents, particularly those south of Newton, are still cleaning up from a powerful storm that blew through the area Friday.

Torrential rain and winds up to 60 miles per hour pelted the area, beginning shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, toppling trees and damaging some buildings. Power was out for about an hour for customers on the east side of Newton and south of town before being restored shortly after 6 p.m. Alliant Energy spokesperson Scott Drcycimski said about 2,100 Alliant Energy customers were without power during the height of the storm, and roughly the same number in Poweshiek County as well, with the majority having power restored by Saturday afternoon.

Officially, 1.32 inches of rain was recorded in Newton from the storm.
