Deteriorating Big Chair to be removed from Newton Public Library lawn

A longtime feature of the Newton Public Library front lawn will soon disappear.

According to a press release submitted by library director Sue Padilla during Monday’s Newton City Council meeting, the Big Chair quickly is coming to the end of its life because of deterioration brought on by Iowa’s weather extremes. The library board recently determined the chair should be removed before it becomes a hazard.

Weather permitting, youth services librarian Phyllis Peter will hold one final story time outside on the library front lawn near the Big Chair at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 19. She will read stories about chairs; participants are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs or a blanket to sit upon.
