County Republicans reconvene, fill ballot for 2012 election

Jasper County Republicans reconvened Saturday to fill their remaining slots on November’s ballot, and now the party has a candidate to contest each county-wide race this fall.

In a phone interview Sunday afternoon, Jasper County Republican Party Chairman Adam Vandall said that roughly 25 delegates gathered and officially nominated Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Hoffman to contest Democrat and Jasper County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy John Halferty for the county sheriff’s seat. County Republicans announced on June 7 their intentions to nominate Hoffman, and reconvened specifically to get the law enforcement officer on the ballot.

Republicans also nominated Laurie Nelson to face incumbent Jasper County Auditor and Democrat Dennis Parrott. Both Parriott and current Jasper County Sheriff Mike Balmer ran unopposed in the 2008 election. Until Saturday’s reconvening at Park Centre, Republicans were only challenging one county seat, with Doug Cupples running against Jasper County Supervisor Denny Stevenson.
