Former Hawkeye Gatens finds an NBA home
(MCT) — Matt Gatens didn’t get picked in Thursday’s NBA draft, but he did find a home in the league, at least for the summer.
The former Iowa guard will play for the Phoenix Suns in an NBA summer league in Las Vegas in July, hoping to earn a spot on the team for training camp in the fall.
Gatens started all 35 games for the Hawkeyes last season, averaging 15.2 points per game. Gatens, who led the Hawkeyes in 3-point shooting last season, ended his career sixth on Iowa’s all-time scoring list with 1,635 points.
The NBA summer league consists of 24 teams — 23 NBA organizations and an NBADL select team — and 60 games. The Suns will play five games at the Cox Pavilion and the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. The league runs from July 13-22.
Gatens produced some big numbers throughout his Iowa career. He ranked second all-time in 3-pointers made (239) and attempted (652). He was only the second player in school history to have 1,600 points, 450 rebounds, 250 assists and 125 steals.
Gatens scored in double figures 89 times in his career, scoring 20 or more points 18 times. He was also a steady presence in the Iowa lineup, missing just two games because of injury in his four seasons.
