Perez goes the distance as Express beat I-Cubs

Round Rock, Tex. (ICubs) — Martin Perez pitched a complete game and Iowa native Brad Nelson homered to lead the Round Rock Express (33-41) to a 6-2 win over the Iowa Cubs (31-43) at Dell Diamond tonight.  The Express lead this series 2-1 and lead the season series 6-5.

Perez (5-5) allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out four in his first complete game of the season.  He didn’t allow a hit before Josh Vitters homered with two outs in the fourth inning.  The Cubs added their second run in the seventh inning.  With two outs, Brian Esposito walked and scored on a double by Ty Wright.  The only other Cubs’ hit was a two-out double by Brett Jackson in the sixth inning.

Cubs’ starter Frankie De La Cruz (1-2) was charged with five runs, but only two were earned over 4.2 innings.  A passed ball and an error led to a run in the first inning and the Express scored two more unearned runs in the second after Joey Butler reached on an error by Vitters at third base to start the inning.
