Hike and bike trail stretch to remain closed through June 29

The hike and bike trail between Newton High School and Maytag Park (also known as the portion of trail through the Children’s Forest) will be closed until June 29th, Newton Public Works Director Keith Laube announced today.

Laube said an inspection of the creek crossing revealed that there is considerable erosion under the trail that could undermine the concrete path in the future. City crews will be constructing a box culvert at the creek crossing. The path across the creek will be made wider and a railing will be constructed to make the crossing safer.

The trail has been closed since Wednesday morning for repairs.
