Cardinal softball goes 1-1 at weekend tournament

After the Newton softball team’s scheduled Friday night game against Oskaloosa was rained out, the Cardinals played in a tournament on Saturday at State Center, where they went 1-1.

Newton fell 5-0 to East Marshall — ranked No. 5 in Class 3A — and then defeated Adel-DeSoto-Minburn in an 11-10 slugfest.

Against East Marshall (18-1), the Cardinals were held to three hits — coming from seniors Courtney Meyer, Alora Simmons and sophomore Madison Bagnall — while the Mustangs scored all five of their runs in the first inning and put the game in cruise control from then on.
