Newton boys tennis takes fourth at conference meet

The Newton boys tennis team took part in the Little Hawkeye Conference meet in Grinnell on Monday, where the Cards walked away with a fourth-place finish.

Leading the way for Newton was the senior doubles team of Troy Scott and McKinley Brown, which took third in the No. 1 doubles bracket. After defeating a duo from Oskaloosa 6-2, 6-1 in the first round, Scott and Brown were victims of a comeback by the team from Norwalk, whom the Cards had just defeated on Friday. Scott and Brown bounced back in their next match, however, besting Grinnell for third place.

Another Newton senior doubles pair, Jon Tudor and Heli Nascimento, finished fourth in the No. 2 doubles bracket. They bested Knoxville 6-4, 6-0 in the first round, but then fell in straight sets to Norwalk in the second round and were defeated by Osky in the finals.

Rounding out Newton’s placings for the day were a pair of fifth-place singles finishes by seniors Aaron Thompson and Carter McDermott. Thompson, who was battling in the No. 1 singles bracket, lost his first match before fighting back to earn fifth with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Knoxville’s Zach Milonas. McDermott followed a similar path at No. 2, but defeated Knoxville’s Jared McClung to earn his finish.

The Cardinals will be thrown right back into tough competition when they travel to Cedar Rapids Washington for the district meet on Thursday.
