Park board considering new disc
golf course

The disc golf course at Maytag Park is wildly popular. Almost any time of day, any day of the week, a visitor can find someone on the course tossing a disc toward one of the metal baskets. In fact, the course is getting a reputation for being one of the best disc golf courses in central Iowa.

The Newton Park Board, in order to take some of the pressure of heavy usage off the course, has been discussing the possibility of a second disc golf course at Woodland Park in the northern part of Newton.

Almost simultaneously, Joe Urias, owner of Mojo Cycling, and Doug Hill and Kyle Hill of the Newton Disc Golf League, who maintain the Maytag course, were wondering if a course at Woodland would be possible. Urias talked to the park board and began fundraising efforts, and Scott Innis, the designer of the Maytag course, began laying out design plans for a course at Woodland.

Nathan Unsworth, administrative superintendent for Newton parks, said the course design is still a work in progress.

“Some holes are close to the right-of-way, and there is a plan for an eventual bike trail at the south end of the park,” Unsworth said. “After the next park board meeting, we should know more about the course layout and tentative dates for beginning work.”

Urias said the fundraising is essentially complete. All but three holes, one for Mojo Cycling, one for First Newton National Bank, and one for Hy-Vee, are being sponsored by individuals. Urias said he is now putting together three bids for the disc golf baskets, signs and 6-by-12 foot tee pads.

The Newton Park Board’s next scheduled meeting will be on Friday, April 13.
