Board Program

Naturalist Chrissy Rea will visit the library at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, to talk about the amphibians and reptiles. She will bring a salamander and a snake for demonstration purposes, talk about the differences between them and look at some common and not-so-common Iowa “herps.” Then everyone will work together to demonstrate how a snake digests its meal.

Book Review of the Week

On Jan. 8, 2011, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was meeting with her constituents in Tucson, Ariz. A gunman walked up to her and shot her in the head, killed six people and wounded 13 others. I remember watching the coverage of this on television and being horrified — sickened when they reported that Gabby had died and thankful when they said they were wrong and she was still alive. Like many others, I’ve watched her recovery with hope and admiration for her courage and the strength and support of her family.

In “Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope,” Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, share their story with the world. This inspirational account will capture the reader immediately with the opening lines from Mark Kelly right through to the final chapter in Gabby’s voice. I found this very moving, and I think other readers will as well. The book is available on the new biography shelves of the library.
