Bette Stewart Kalsem, 78, of Indianola passed away on Feb. 5, 2012, after a long illness.

Bette was born July 12, 1933, in Newton, Iowa to Clifford and Nellie Stewart. She attended Iowa State University where she enjoyed her days at the Sigma Kappa Sorority. After graduation she married Marion Kalsem and had two daughters.

Bette taught elementary school in Des Moines for 40 years during which time she received her Masters of Education degree from Drake University. She was a dedicated teacher who put much energy into engaging and educating her students. 

Bette had many interests and in earlier years she enjoyed watching her daughters take part in horse shows. She also enjoyed gardening, attending opera and theater performances, traveling and caring for many pets.  Her greatest joy in recent years was spending time with her beloved granddaughter, Laila Kamhawy.

She will be missed by her daughter, Karol (Amr) Kamhawy of Waukee; daughter, Kristine (Mark) Schulman of Alabama; brother, Robert Stewart of North Carolina and three grandchildren.

A memorial service took place at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 8, at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn’s Chapel in Des Moines. The family greeted friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League or the John Stoddard Cancer Center.
