Twelve area wrestlers advance to district meet, including five Mustangs
Three Jasper County teams took part in the Class 1A wrestling sectional at Pleasantville on Saturday, and they combined to produce seven district qualifiers.
Collins-Maxwell-Baxter advanced three individual wrestlers onto districts, with freshman Jake Hennick (106 pounds), senior Cody Christianson (138) and senior Alan Johnson (220) all finishing with runner-up honors. As a team, CMB finished in fourth place with 131 points.
All three of CMB’s wrestlers faced stiff competition in the finals as Hennick fell to Colfax-Mingo’s Jimmy Abell, Christianson lost a close 3-2 decision and Johnson was on the wrong end of a pin. In the early rounds, however, Christianson completed a 10-point comeback and Johnson breezed through with two pins.
Junior Lehvi Bucklin did not compete after suffering a neck injury earlier in the week. Johnson was actually questionable for the meet himself after he suffered a head injury at the same practice as Bucklin.
Lynnville-Sully took third place overall and had two district qualifiers. Leading the Hawks was senior Kyle Terlouw (34-5), who was the champion at 285 pounds. Sophomore Caden Doll (24-6) will join him next Saturday after a runner-up finish at 152.
The Hawks had 11 of their 13 wrestlers place in the top four, including four who just missed out on districts with a third-place finish. Freshman Cole Nickell, senior Blake Dunsbergen, junior Jamison Goodyk and senior Madison Hay each took third.
Colfax-Mingo also sent two wrestlers to districts, both as sectional champions.
Freshman sensation Jimmy Abel won the 106-pound title and improved his record to 21-1, while junior Dylan Albright (34-6) was the champion at 170 pounds. Abel pinned both of his opponents in the first period, while Albright had to fight off his back and came from behind to win 6-5 in the finals.
Six other Tigerhawks placed in the top four, including third-place finishes from senior Tyler Annis (195) and sophomore Brandon Byal (285). Annis is the only senior on the team.
Those seven qualifiers will wrestle at Eddyville on Saturday, with action beginning at noon.
SFlbPCM advances five in 2A
Despite carrying a number of top seeds into the meet, the PCM wrestling team finished a surprising third place behind Bondurant-Farrar and Grinnell at the Class 2A South Tama sectional meet.
Bondurant-Farrar and Grinnell advanced to team dual regionals by taking first and second overall, as the top two teams from each sectional.
The Mustangs still carried a number of champions and runners-up, however, as senior Class 2A fourth-ranked Dalton Kingery (126), senior Zach Findlow (182) and third-ranked senior Jake Tool (285) all took top billing. Seniors Bryce Wignall (145) and Josh Drew (220) took runner-up honors at the meet.
Those five will advance to the district meet this Saturday, which will be held on the Mustangs’ home turf in Monroe.

Grandview Park Baptist
The PCM boys and girls basketball teams triumphed over Grandview Park Baptist Friday night, as the Mustang boys won 68-49 and the girls wrapped up Heart of Iowa Conference play with a 56-35 win over the Defenders.
Freshman Courtney Van Houweling led the Mustangs girls (12-9, 9-9) with a big 20-point effort on the night. Junior Kaitlyn Wilkie and freshman Grace Telfer each turned in 10 points as well. PCM held a 32-17 lead at halftime and cruised through the second half 24-18 to earn the W.
Even with senior Scott Bruxvoort sitting out with an injury, the Mustang boys (18-2, 16-1) had more than enough firepower to earn their 14th win in a row. PCM got a pair of double-doubles from seniors Jordan Van Roekel (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Hutch Burns (12 points, 10 rebounds) to help pace the offense and defense. The Mustang bench saw some considerable time on the floor, including five points and nine rebounds from Alex DeWitte.
PCM’s girls will be off until Saturday, when they will square off with county and conference rival Collins-Maxwell-Baxter for the third time this season in the first round of the Class 2A district tournament in Monroe. The Mustang boys will wrap up their regular season against Nevada on Tuesday.
SFlbHawk girls, boys top HLV
The Lynnville-Sully girls and boys basketball teams both turned in big defensive efforts on Friday, topping HLV (Victor) at home by scores of 57-27 and 37-22.
The Hawk girls started out rough, trailing 16-6 after the first quarter, but then blew out the Warriors in each quarter after in what was the final home game for six Lynnville-Sully seniors, including four starters.
Sophomore Lyndsay Terpstra led the team with 16 points and had nine rebounds, while senior Brianna James had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Hawks held the Warriors to 23 percent shooting, and outrebounded them 48-20. They missed 39 shots, but grabbed 20 offensive rebounds.
Fourth-ranked Lynnville-Sully finishes the regular season at 19-2 overall and in second place in the South Iowa Cedar League at 18-2, and will host Southeast Warren in a regional first round game on Thursday.
On the boys’ side, the Hawks managed only 37 points, but held the Warriors to just eight baskets in the win. HLV led 12-7 after the first quarter, but scored only 10 more points and was shut out in the fourth.
Sophomores TJ Cunningham, Darin Hofer and junior Nathan Russell each had eight points for Lynnville-Sully, which improved to 16-3 overall and 16-2 in the SICL.
The Hawk boys are at Iowa Valley tonight.
