Police warn against scam
The Newton Police Department has received information that Newton residents are receiving telephone calls from individuals claiming to be Microsoft representatives.
The callers claim to want to fix the resident’s computer. The caller claims their records show that the computer owner has received a number of error messages about software failures and tells the resident to download remote access software. If the computer owner gives the caller the remote access, the caller can steal the person’s identity and wreak havoc on their computer.
The police department is reminding local residents to be cautious and not allow access to their computers and personal records. Residents should be diligent in verifying who they are dealing with and, if uncertain, do not allow access to their computers and personal records.
