Five Newton Senior High School students competed in the Ames Regional Science Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Iowa State University in Ames, answering dozens of science and math questions.

The five students representing NHS included juniors Anna Lothe and Katelyn McCarey and seniors Jon Ellis, James Klier and Jay Kakade. Klier and Kakade shared responsibilities as team captain. The Newton team tied with Western Dubuque High School with two wins and two losses after the morning round robin competition. Western Dubuque earned 12 more points than the Newton team and advanced, along with Dowling, to the semifinal competition from the Blue Pool.

“I was impressed with our team’s knowledge, their competitive spirit and their willingness to get up three hours before sunrise on a Saturday morning to compete,” said Margaret Caldwell, sponsor of the NHS team. “We were all disappointed when they missed advancing to the semifinals by such a narrow margin. West Des Moines edged out Central Academy of Des Moines to advance to the National Science Bowl held in Washington, D.C., this spring.”
