WATERLOO (AP) — A 50-year-old man has died after falling through the ice while fishing at George Wyth Lake in Waterloo.

Authorities say the man was pronounced dead at Allen Hospital on Wednesday night.

His name isn’t being released until relatives have been told about his death.

Fire Battalion Chief Mike Junk says the man was likely underwater for several minutes. He was unresponsive when rescue crews reached him.

Junk says a park ranger had heard a man call for help around 7:30 p.m. The darkness and fog prevented the ranger from seeing the man, so the ranger called 911. Rescuers found the man while using a hooked pole to probe deep in open water.
