PCM boys earn hard-fought double-OT victory at Gilbert
The Prairie City-Monroe boys basketball team nearly had its 13-game win streak snapped at Gilbert Tuesday night, but the Mustangs prevailed with a 65-63 double overtime victory over the Tigers.
Senior Scott Bruxvoort led the Mustangs (17-2, 15-1 Heart of Iowa Conference) with 23 points in the extra-session effort. Fellow seniors Jordan Van Roekel and Sean O’Connor also did some heavy lifting for the second game in a row as Van Roekel finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, and O’Connor chipped in with 14 points. Senior Hutch Burns piloted the PCM offense with seven assists.
A four-point second quarter left the Mustangs trailing 26-18 at halftime, but a 23-point third quarter put the Mustangs back in the driver’s seat. The Tigers then responded with a 15-10 fourth to send the game into overtime.
The first OT was a draw at 5-5, but PCM narrowly outscored the Tigers 9-7 in the second to grab the W. It was the Mustangs’ second two-point win in as many games after another 65-63 defeat of North Polk on Friday.
Mustang girls fall to Tigers
The PCM girls were defeated by second-place Gilbert 35-21 on Tuesday for their third straight loss. The Mustangs are now 11-9 overall and dropped to 8-9 in the conference.
Both PCM teams will host Grandview Park Baptist on Friday night in Monroe.
