• Marcia E. Engelbrecht, 25, of Colfax was charged with driving while license suspended at 12:51 a.m. Thursday. According to a police report, the subject’s vehicle was stopped in the 1800 block of South 12th Ave. W. for an inoperable brake light. Engelbrecht was cited and released to appear in court.
• After allegedly blocking a roadway with his bicycle Thursday, a 14-year-old Newton male was charged with disorderly conduct for provoking an angry driver who punched the juvenile in the face. According to a police report, 44-year-old Darrin L. Hamilton of Newton also was charged with serious domestic assault when he exited his car at 413 W. Second St. S. and hit the 14-year-old. Hamilton told police he was honking at the bike rider and said the 14-year-old was using profane language and gestures in response. The youth had a swollen lip and face after police arrived at the scene. Investigators found he’d been punched in the right side of his face. The juvenile subject was riding his bike in the 100 block of First Street South prior to the incident, and police said witnesses confirmed he was preventing traffic from passing. Hamilton was released to appear in court, and the 14-year-old’s case will be handled by juvenile authorities.
• Rodney C. Lewis, 29, of Newton was arrested and charged with serious domestic assault Thursday after he allegedly punched a female victim in the face and arms several times. According to a police report, Lewis caused bruising to the 28-year-old’s chin and arms during an incident reported at 11:48 p.m. Jan. 24, somewhere in the 800 block of North Third Avenue East. Police said they interviewed both the victim and Lewis, and the alleged assailant came to the NPD office to receive his charges. Lewis was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Taylor A. McSwain, 17, of Altoona was charged with driving while license suspended at 12:37 a.m. Saturday after her vehicle was stopped for driving without headlights activated. According to a police report, McSwain was stopped in the 400 block of South Second Avenue West. She was cited and released to appear in court.
• Darren C. Ohmstede, 27, of Newton was arrested on a warrant at 6:32 p.m. Friday for failure to appear in court. According to a police report, the subject did not appear for his initial hearing on a driving while license suspended charge. He was located at his residence and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Bruce E. Right, 49, of Newton was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and interference with official acts after he was unable to complete sobriety maneuvers during an encounter with law enforcement Wednesday. According to a police report, Right’s vehicle was stopped in the 700 block of East Seventh Street North after he had left the scene of an alleged domestic assault at 627 E. 27th St. N. Police said that prior to his arrest, Right approached the officer “pointing his finger in a threatening manner.” A chemical test showed the subject’s blood alcohol level to be .132. He was placed in the Jasper County Jail.
• Patricia C. Smith, 59, of Dubuque was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated at 3:44 a.m. Friday after she was observed swerving on the shoulder of Interstate 80. According to a police report, employees at the Love’s Truck Stop reported the subject smelled of alcohol and left the parking lot. Smith’s vehicle was stopped near the 171 mile marker and taken into custody after failing to perform sobriety maneuvers. A chemical test showed her blood alcohol content to register at .093. Smith was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• The Newton Police Department, in conjunction with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division’s Iowa Pledge program, completed tobacco compliance checks at 18 retail establishments, resulting in three citations for providing tobacco to a minor. Citations were issued to Michele Worden, 42, at Newton 66; Julie Burr, 45, at Casey’s West and Roger Cupples, 65, at Walmart.

• Todd Allan Mich, 40, of Newton was arrested at Skiff Medical Center on Sunday on a warrant for failure to appear in court. According to a sheriff’s office report, Mich did not appear for a hearing regarding payment of child support. It is not known what brought officers to Skiff to make the 3:15 p.m. arrest. Mich was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 15 and older.

There seems to be some pretty tough guys in Newton. So tough they beat up women and children. |
