• Christopher J. Pierce, 42, of Colfax was arrested on a warrant at 8:53 p.m. Tuesday for failure to appear in court. According to a sheriff’s office report, Pierce neglected to pay child support prior to his missed court hearing. Deputies took him into custody at 1867 W. 1032nd St. N. in Colfax and transported Pierce to the Jasper County Jail.
• Jennifer M. Sheikh, 36, of Des Monies was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and child endangerment Sunday after several witnesses reported her vehicle driving erratically on Interstate 80. According to a police report, she failed sobriety maneuvers during a 12:39 p.m. investigation at the 164 mile maker, where officers also found a young child in the car without a safety seat. Police said they believed Sheikh to be under the influence of prescription drugs during the incident. She also was cited for failure to have a valid driver’s license during the traffic stop. Sheikh was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Michael R. Smith, 27, of Newton was arrested and charged with domestic assault and false imprisonment at 4:50 p.m. Monday after he allegedly held a female subject at knife point on Newton’s southwest side. According to a police report, Smith threw the 27-year-old victim on a bed at 1209 W. 16th St. S., Apt. 207. The victim phoned a friend who called Newton police to the scene. No injuries were reported during the incident. Smith was taken to the Jasper County Jail and was released Tuesday on a $1,000 bond, according to online court records. He’s scheduled to have an initial appearance in Jasper County District Court via live video feed Feb. 1.

• Jeremy J. Wyatt, 34, of Newton was arrested on a warrant at 5:53 p.m. Tuesday for failure to appear in court in Harrison County, Missouri. According to a Sheriff’s Office report, Harrison County officials confirmed that they would seek extradition for the charges. Wyatt was taken into custody at 3118 Highway F48 West and transported to the Jasper County Jail to await transfer.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 15 and older.
