Library hosting blues concerts Monday nights in February
Blues Under the Blue
Roof VI
On Monday nights in February, the library will be jumping with hot blues music when the Newton Public Library partners with the South Skunk Blues Society to present Blues Under the Blue Roof VI.
Soulful guitarist Bob Pace will launch the blues event Feb. 6. Bob has been revving up Iowa audiences for more than 30 years with his talent and potent songwriting. He was inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2008; however, his long musical career has been mostly driven by his passion for blues. He has opened for nationally known blues artists such as John Mayall, Johnny Winter, Delbert McClinton, Bernard Allison, Tower of Power, James Solberg, Tinsley Ellis, Dave Hole, Savoy Brown and others. Never hesitating to donate his time and talent for a good cause, Bob has played benefit concerts for Katrina, the homeless, U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Birdland flood victims. The library is proud to welcome him in 2012.
Don’t forget our other blues concerts in February: Bryce Janey will perform his brand of down-home blues, which showcases his soulful vocals and haunting slide guitar, on Monday, Feb. 13. The third concert in the series on Feb. 20, will feature Kevin “BF” Burt’s stunning voice, great guitar work and mastery of the harmonica. For the final concert on Feb. 27, Rob Lumbard will share his unique finger-picking guitar style on blues and jazz tunes. All concerts are free and open to the public.
JC Conservation Board Programs

Book Review of the Week
Lisa Kleypas introduces readers to a very different kind of hero in her historical romance, “Dreaming of You.” Derek Craven, introduced as a secondary character in “Then Came You,” has grown up on the streets of London but has managed to “make good” by opening a highly exclusive gaming house. No matter how rich he has grown, Derek still has questions about his own worth as a human being. He’s hard, tough and suspicious. Into his world walks the unworldly country author, Sara Fielding. She enters Derek’s sphere of influence with an academic curiosity that quickly changes to intrigue with the man himself.
Despite his cynicism, Sara fascinates Derek too, but danger stalks them. Derek has enemies who want to bring him to his knees, and they set out to use Sara to make it happen. What I really loved about the story was Derek. It isn’t often you find a hero from the lower classes in historical romance, so Derek’s Cockney background appealed to me as a reader. I enjoyed Derek and Sara’s romance because they were two strong characters who served as excellent foils for one another. Sara acts as a mirror for Derek so he can see the man he wants to be but doesn’t believe he is.
