0

The Newton Development Corporation — along with JEDCO, DMACC and the Jasper Community Foundation — recently announced that for the fourth consecutive year a Leadership Development class will be offered Tuesday evenings from Feb. 28 though April 24 at DMACC in Newton.

The program is designed to provide all Jasper County residents with the skills and tools to effectively participate in community or work related leadership opportunities.

The program is open to any Jasper County resident or anyone working at a Jasper County business. The tuition for the eight-week course is $219. Once again, the Jasper Community Foundation will reimburse half the tuition to the first 20 who register and complete a minimum of six of the eight sessions.

Evelyn George will be teaching six of the eight sessions. George has a teaching degree from UNI, an MBA from Iowa and has attended the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs. George also has worked in marketing and product development at Maytag, Allsteel Office and Iowa Farm Bureau. The topics she will cover are economic development, education and youth, county and city government services, health and human services and civic groups. These sessions will feature panel discussions with community leaders in the first hour. In the second hour the class will evaluate leadership styles, communication methods, conflict management, negotiation approaches, board member roles and navigating change as they relate to building communities.

At the March 13 and 27 sessions, the class will participate in the Real Colors Personality Instrument, an effective tool for improving communication skills with all types of work styles.

“I absolutely love the COLORS portion of the Leadership class,” said Vicky Norrish, a participant in last years’ leadership class. “It was very interesting to find out what makes people tick. This would be useful in any work environment. I strongly recommend it!”

The COLORS segments will be taught by Buzz Hoffman who is a certified instructor for the Real Colors program.

The classes will held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. from Feb. 28 through April 24 (no class the week of March 20- Spring Break). The classes will be at DMACC at the NDC board room (#264) To register call DMACC at 515-964-6800 or 1-800-342-0033, give the Course Reference number 26964. Registration deadline is February 17th.
