Daughters of the American

Revolution Grinnell Chapter

Members of the Grinnell Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met at the home of Donna McCoy in Newton on Nov. 12 with 19 members and guest speaker Edee Brunia.

Regent Darlene Leib opened the meeting with the DAR Ritual, Pledge of Allegiance and the American Creed. Donna Randolph gave the devotion. Emily Ehler read the president’s general message. Dee Meyer read the national defense report, and Gail Bonath read an article on Veteran’s Day. Bobbie Collins read the flag minutes, Lelah Main read Indian minutes, and Barbara Jones gave conservation minutes on light bulbs. Marilyn Planer read about Kate Duncan DAR School and Women’s Issue. The DAR good citizen chairman reported that the chapter had five schools that turned in forms. The sunshine report indicated that five cards had been sent out. Kris Macy gave the constitution report on Pearl Harbor, and all recited the Preamble.

Maretta Grattan, chairman of the American history committee, announced he winners of an essay contest on the War of 1812 were Central Iowa Christian School students Cecilia Mitchell, eighth grade, first place; Faith Roland, sixth grade, second place; and Hope Roland, sixth grade, third place. The three winners received certificates, bronze medal and pocket size dictionaries. Six honorable mention students also received certificate and pocket size dictionaries.

The nominating committee announced it will begin working toward getting a new slate of officers for 2012-2013. Regent Leib adjourned the meeting, and Chaplain Donna Randolph gave the benediction.

The December meeting will begin at 9 a.m. at the Centre for Art & Artists at 501 W. Third St. N. in Newton. Bobbie Collins and Darlene Leib will serve as hostesses, with hobo soup lunch being served after master questionnaire. Anyone interested in joining DAR can attend or call Darlene at (641) 792-0174.

Spirit of ’76 Questers

Twelve Spirit of ’76 Questers met for their October meeting at the home of Lelah Main with Mary Loe as co-hostess.

The program “Just SewSew” given by Main was about sewing machines and attachments, sewing baskets and also personal sewing anecdotes. Each member received an advertisement package of needles.

President Pam Andrew reminded the group about decorating the museum’s 1930s living room and the area day in Des Moines.

Golden Agers Club

The Golden Agers Club met on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Majors Bob and Margaret Mills, new officers at The Salvation Army, were introduced. The Mills had served in Newton in the past and said they were happy to return.

President Bonnie Swalwell Eilert read October minutes and the treasurer’s report. Queen Margaret Bailey read a story titled, “Caution, Don’t Honk Off the Buffalo.” The group celebrated anniversaries for two couples. The Women’s Relief Corps of the Grand Army of the Republic hosted the Golden Agers Club’s meeting, decorating the tables with a fall theme. Arlene Crocker won the door prize, refreshments were served, and Pearl Robson gave the closing prayer.

At noon Tuesday, The Salvation Army will provide a free meal to Golden Agers and the community. Those wanting to attend must call The Salvation Army for reservations.

Barrett Homemakers

The Barrett Homemakers met for their November meeting at Shay’s Tea Room in Newton with nine members and one guest attending the luncheon. Those present were Pat Bates, Gertrude Van Sickle, Bobbette Palmer, Mary Klemm, Delores Klemm, Barbara Tinineko, Barbara Ashby, Irene Erwin, Linda Van Maanen and guest Janice Miller.

It was decided to send $25 to the Jasper County Courthouse Lighting Fund and $25 to the East Jasper Christian Food Pantry.

The December meeting will be at the home of Linda Van Maanen. Husbands are invited to attend.  The event will be a potluck dinner at noon. Those attending are asked to bring a $3 to $5 bingo gift, goodies for the afternoon coffee time and food for the food pantry.
