Memorial Day services planned

Memorial Day services are planned for a number of cemeteries throughout Jasper County this weekend. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Newton Union Cemetery, with the address delivered by Doug Bishop. In case of inclement weather, the ceremonies will be held at the VFW Post 1655 in Newton.

St. John’s Cemetery, located in northern Jasper County, will have an open house at the cemetery from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Monday in celebration of Memorial Day.

The Baxter American Legion Post 493 will host a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. Monday at Restland Cemetery in Baxter. Memorial Day services at the Wittemberg Cemetery will be at 9 a.m. Monday.

Also, several City of Newton services will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day,.

Newton City Hall, Newton police and fire department business offices, Newton Sanitary Landfill, Newton Public Library, Newton Parks & Recreation Office and Newton Public Works will be closed Monday.

Westwood Municipal Golf Course will be open if weather permits, and Dodd’s Trash Hauling & Recycling Inc. will collect Monday’s trash and recyclables on Tuesday.
