Newton Police

Department

• Laura K. Adam, 28, of Newton was cited for driving while license suspended at 1:45 a.m. Saturday after Newton police stopped her vehicle for an inoperable brake light. Adam was released to appear in court.

• Bryce S. Canaga, 21, of Omaha, Neb., is facing several Jasper County drug charges after Newton police found him in possession of marijuana after he was observed scalping tickets in the Iowa Speedway parking lot Sunday. The controlled substances were located in Canaga’s vehicle near the area where he was scalping race tickets, according to police reports. After a the baggie of marijuana and smoking pipe were located, Canaga was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Wyatt A. Franklin, 19, of Newton was arrested at 12:22 a.m. May 16 and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop for an inoperable tail light resulted in finding controlled substances in his vehicle. According to Newton police reports, officers found a baggie marijuana, an additional 6 grams of marijuana in the glove compartment, a smoking pipe and a baggie containing 26 pills of hydrocodone during a consented search. Franklin was taken to the Jasper County Jail from the 1100 block of West 12th Street South and was issued two additional charges Wednesday for possession of a schedule II prescription with intent to deliver and possession of a prescription without a drug tax stamp.

• A Newton man is in the Jasper County Jail after he allegedly beat a male victim while the victim was in bed during a burglary at 606 S. Second Ave. W. at 6:25 a.m. Sunday. Larry E. Morris, 50, was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary after police located him at his residence at 608 S. Second Ave. W. Apt. 2. Morris caused the victim to have bruising and a bloody nose. He took the resident’s home phone during the burglary. Morris was taken to the Jasper County Jail. He is still being held on a $20,000 bond Tuesday, and according to Jasper County District Court records, Morris is currently awaiting a trial scheduled for Wednesday for charges in an incident on April 14 including aggravated assault and assaulting a police officer. Morris posted a $5,000 bond in that case.

• Joshua D. Rupe, 36, of Des Moines was arrested and charged with public intoxication (first offense) after Newton police were called to Skiff medical center for reports of a “combative patient.” According to department officials, Rupe was slurring his speech and smelled strongly of alcohol, as officers interviewed the subject. He refused his right to a chemical test and was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• John R. Straw, 47, and Tanya L. Straw, 42, both of Newton were arrested at 1020 E. 12th St. N. Apt. 2, Wednesday at 11:39 p.m. on a warrant for conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. They were arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Bradly E. Thurman, 25, of Waukee was cited for driving while license suspended at 10 p.m. Thursday. Thurman was stopped by Newton police in the 1000 block of Eighth Street South when officers recognized Thurman as a driver known to have a suspended license. He was released to appear in court.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office

• Benjamin D. Beck, 21, of Newton was brought to the Jasper County Law Center at 1:40 p.m. Friday by a bail bondsman who reported that Beck had allegedly skipped out on bail payment. Beck was charged with bond revocation and placed in the Jasper County Jail.

• Cindy I. Ruby, 46, of Des Moines was arrested and charged with public intoxication at 12:30 p.m. Sunday after she was observed by deputies falling in two incidents at the Iowa Speedway. Authorities approached Ruby at Gate 1 of the facility where she was having trouble standing and told deputies she felt intoxicated. A field breathalyzer showed Ruby with a blood alcohol content of .176. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

Prairie City Police Department

• Jeremy L. Chirch, 31, of Des Moines was arrested and charged with driving while license revoked at 5:10 p.m. Sunday after Prairie City police officers stopped Chirch’s vehicle for a traffic violation. After officers ran his identification information and found his license to be revoked he was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Stephanie L. Jones, 32, of Knoxville was charged with two counts of driving while license suspended after Prairie City police stopped her for a traffic violation at 5:10 p.m. Sunday. Jones was released to appear in court.

• Rodney A. Marshall, 41, of Windsor Heights was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated at 8:43 p.m. May 16. Prairie City police stopped Marshall’s vehicle for a traffic violation before the authorities determined that he was intoxicated. Marshall was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. It is the policy of the Newton Daily News to release the names of individuals charged with a crime who are 15 and up.
