OSKALOOSA — A furious second-half rally fell short for Newton Friday night, as the Cardinals dropped a heartbreaker, 37-30, on the road against Oskaloosa.

Newton trailed 20-0 just 6 minutes, 47 seconds into the game as two botched punt attempts set up the Indians for second and third scores.

Ira Mitchell and Kole Wilson scored first-half touchdowns for the Cardinals, while Oskaloosa added another to take a 30-14 lead into halftime.

Reid McDermott started Newton's rally with a 1-yard TD and the Cardinals made the 2-point conversion to pull within 30-22. Another 1-yard score on their next possession and a 2-point conversion tied the game at 30 at the end of the third quarter.

The teams traded possessions in the fourth, until another failed punt attempt set up the Indians' at the Cardinals' 17, and they scored a few plays later.

Newton had one last possession late in the fourth and marched to Oskaloosa 30, but a  fumble was recovered by the Indians, who knelt on the ball for the victory.

The Cardinals (0-2) open up district play next week when they host Dallas-Center Grimes.
