Tea is a health drink

Many foods and beverages contain them. Berries, soy, lemons, tea, apples, dark chocolate, red wine and onions are just some of the sources of them. But what is it? It’s the natural plant substance, flavonoids, and tea is one of the best sources.

Flavonoids are a group of plant substances that offer health benefits. They seem to work in the body to improve the function of veins and arteries. This means they can contribute to maintaining health.

Drinking tea has been linked to several health benefits that have been associated with antioxidant activity; however, this hypothesis has recently been dismissed. Experts now believe that tea flavonoids (including catechins), theanine and caffeine most likely provide the health benefits.

Many studies have linked a high intake of flavonoid-rich foods with a reduction in the risk of developing certain diseases that include heart disease and stroke. Further research suggests a link to cancer, but the results are still conflicting, and no clear conclusion can be drawn.

Some Asian research also suggests that green tea flavonoids (also called catechins) can be helpful for people trying to lose weight. But more research is needed to confirm these findings in Western populations. There is no clear evidence that the EGCG (catechins) in green and black tea or in a supplement increase metabolism. We do know that unsweetened tea contains zero calories, therefore providing a healthy option for those managing their weight.

Along with health benefits, calorie-free tea is an excellent beverage to maintain hydration. Adults require approximately 64 to 100 ounces of fluid per day. Tea can help you consume adequate fluid. Research has shown that the caffeine in tea will not lead to dehydration.

Research suggests that drinking 2 to 3 cups of black tea can help maintain focus and improve alertness. Theanine in combination with caffeine is likely responsible for these effects.

With all this good news about tea, experts suggest enjoying two to three cups of black, green or oolong tea daily for health benefits. There is no set amount that is thought to be too much, but it is recommended that your intake of red wine and chocolate be kept at a moderate level.
