South Skunk River cleanup effort planned for August reset to Sept. 26
Jasper County Conservation has rescheduled its South Skunk River cleanup efforts a second time due to high river levels and dangerous currents. The cleanup is now planned for Sunday, Sept. 26.
Volunteers should plan to meet at 11:30 a.m. on the west side of Highway F48, just south to Interstate 80. The day will begin with a free lunch on site, and then participants will pilot canoes along a seven-mile stretch of the South Skunk River in Jasper County ending on Highway 14 south of Newton. Along the way, volunteers will remove pop cans, plastic sacks, tires, barrels and other pieces of trash found in the river and along the river banks.
Volunteers will receive free canoe use and a free T-shirt. Participants should dress for the weather, bring work gloves and wear closed-toe shoes. Pre-registration is required for the event.
