CARBONDALE, Ill. — A zoology student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has won a scholarship from a national fisheries group for her academic performance and promise in the field of fisheries.

Nicolle MacVey won a scholarship from Walleyes Unlimited. A graduate student from Newton, MacVey is the daughter of Debra MacVey and Karl MacVey.

Walleyes Unlimited is one of the nation’s largest fishing groups promoting multi-species recreational fishing, said James Garvey, director of the Fisheries & Illinois Aquaculture Center at SIUC.

“The Fisheries & Illinois Aquaculture Center and Department of Zoology have a long history of capturing student awards in fisheries and aquaculture at the national level,” Garvey said. “We could not be prouder of all our students’ accomplishments in research, teaching, and service.”

MacVey recently earned her undergraduate degree at SIUC and is working with Garvey on her master’s degree. Her graduate project explores the factors that affect growth and survival of young paddlefish in the Mississippi River.

The scholarship is worth $1,000.
