Book Review of the Week
Finally a cookbook for the rest of us.
Most cookbooks are geared toward families or entertaining for groups. But when you are cooking for one instead of many, trying to whittle those great recipes down for use can seem daunting.
In one handy book, “The Pleasures of Cooking for One” by Judith Jones, readers can find recipes just for them. The recipes range from gourmet to comfort foods and are created for a single serving.
Want to cook for two? Double the recipe. The chapters start with Cooking through the Week featuring tasty meals including meat dishes. There are also chapters dedicated to soups, eggs, vegetables, grains and finally sweets and treats. There are nice sidebar articles within the chapters that offer special tips or tricks. While there isn’t a photo to accompany each recipe, there are enough photos of complete dishes to whet any appetite. “The Pleasures of Cooking for One” is available for check out in the new nonfiction collection of the library.
Using EBSCOhost Library Databases
Whether you are a younger student or an adult, EBSCOhost can help fulfill your research needs. It is a powerful online reference system that offers proprietary, full text databases from leading information providers. If you need a magazine or journal article as a source for a research paper, you can use EBSCOhost because the articles found there originally appeared in a print publication.
The database may be used from the library or from home. Go to the library’s Web site, http://www.newton.lib.ia.us and click on the link at the left or the tab at the upper part of the screen labeled “catalog.”
Once in the catalog, enter your “user id” which is your entire library card number found on the back of your library card (with no spaces). Click on the button below to log in then select the Knowledge Portal, and finally Reference Databases. Click on the EBSCO Magazine & Newspaper Search. In EBSCO, choose General (All Sources) to begin the search process. Enter one or more search terms in the blank fields at the top of the advanced search screen and review your results.
EBSCOhost is a complex research tool which would take many columns to sum up with any degree of completeness, but I hope this will get you started. If you have any questions, please e-mail the library, call or stop in, and ask for assistance from the staff at the information desk.
Intro to the Internet — Library Classes
One week sessions of computer classes for adults are taught by Public Services Librarian Holly Youngquist from March through May.
Classes meet three days a week from 9 to 10 a.m. Each one week session covers computer basics and an introduction to Internet searches. Sign-up sheets are located at the Information Desk. Classes are free but are limited to four students per weekly session. If you have questions, call the library at 792-4108.
Tax Forms
Tax forms are located near the information desk. Ask a librarian if you have questions about federal and state income tax forms.
For quick access from home, visit the library home page at www.newton.lib.ia.us then click on the “Quick Links” tab. Links to the federal and state income tax sites are accessible there.
