AMES (ISU) — Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott announced today changes on his staff with the departure of director of operations Ron Smith.

Smith, who spent nine seasons working with McDermott at UNI and ISU, including the last four as director of operations, will start his own business venture in Florida, called USA Sports Tour & Events.

“Ron has been an invaluable asset to me,” McDermott said. “The chance to run his own business and continue working with youth teams was very appealing.”

Smith’s company will bring teams into the Orlando area for tournaments. He also will be involved in organizing custom tours for athletics teams seeking international competition.

ISU assistant coach Jeff Rutter, who has aided McDermott a total of seven seasons, including four with the Cyclones, will take over as director of operations. Rutter’s organizational and communication skills will benefit ISU in his new position.

“Jeff is uniquely qualified to lead our basketball operations because he is familiar with all aspects of this program,” McDermott said.

McDermott is in the process of filling the vacant assistant coach position.
