Local student to tour with university choir
Hannah Klein, a 2011 Human Services major from Reasnor, will be participating in an 11-day spring 2010 tour through Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas and Kansas. The Grand View University Choir will be performing a home concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at Luther Memorial Church, 1201 Grandview Ave., Des Moines, as the finale to its spring 2010 tour.
The tour program consists of choral works from the 13th Century — including “Perspice Christicola,” one of the earliest examples of the polyphonic art — to the present. Highlights of this year’s tour repertoire are Bejamin Britten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb,” Larry Fleming’s “Three About Jesus,” which includes the much-beloved “Give Me Jesus,” Paul Manz’s beautiful “E’en So, Lord Jesus,” and a variety of pieces spanning the church year and representing a wide range of musical styles. Other composers whose works will be presented include William Byrd, Heinrich Schütz, Andreas Hammerschmidt, Paul Tchnesnokoff, J.S. Bach, Francis Poulenc, James Fritschel, Ola Gjeilo, Caldwell and Ivory, Alice Parker and others.
The Grand View Choir members contribute a vibrant energy to the campus community by sharing their musical gifts at celebrations, worship services and campus gatherings throughout each academic year. Students of all majors are encouraged to audition for the Grand View Choir. Dr. Kathryn Pohlmann Duffy is Chair of the Grand View University Music Department and director of the Choir. She holds degrees from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa; Kansas State University; and the University of Chicago, where she earned her doctorate degree in musicology.
