The members of the Berg Middle School Builders’ Club are having a busy year.

In the fall, shortly after organizing the club again after its three year absence, the two dozen members of the club ordered a hundred trees from the Department of Natural Resources State Forest Nursery in Ames and planted them on the Berg Middle School grounds.

Devin Marshall, the seventh grader in charge of the planting stated, “The trees will help purify the air and the water here at Berg. It really didn’t take us very long to plant the trees.”

During the winter sports season, club members Drake Rhone, Tyler Thongvanh and Devin Marshall made “Snack Bags” to sell to students so that they would have a “healthy” snack available after school.

Currently Builders’ Club members are selling “Newton Cardinals” band bracelets and planning for food offerings at the annual Cardinal Capers concert.

Seventh-grade student Melanie Stice is the chairperson of the newest Builders’ Club project: collecting Box Tops for Education and labels from Campbell’s products to buy equipment and supplies for Berg Middle School. Box Tops and labels can be dropped off at the BMS main office during school hours.

Builders’ Club, a student Kiwanis group that encourages young people to make positive contributions to the quality of life in their communities, meets on Friday mornings biweekly and welcomes new members at any time. Advisors for Builders Club this year are Liz Hammerly, Tesha Huffaker, Judy Rodewald and Margaret Caldwell.
