Five Newton High School students — Aaron Kohrs, Jay Kakade, Brandon Beaderstadt, Jon Ellis and Sam Coen — competed in the 20th Annual Department of Energy Regional Science Bowl sponsored by the Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University in Ames on Jan. 30.
“Science Bowl is definitely a test of your scientific knowledge,” said Kohrs, the lone senior on the team. “It was a very enjoyable experience that I would do again, if I had the opportunity.”
In the first round, the Newton team lost to the team from Hempstead High School in Dubuque, which won third place in the tournament. Although the Newton team answered many difficult math and science questions, they did not advance to the semifinals in the afternoon. Kakade, Ellis and Beaderstadt served as team captains.
“This was a great learning experience. I would recommend it to anyone,” Beaderstadt said.
“I had a lot of fun with it. It was a really good learning time,” Coen said.
Margaret Caldwell serves as the teacher sponsor for Science Bowl at Newton Senior High School.
