COLFAX — The first time the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls played rival Colfax-Mingo, the Raiders rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to beat the Tigerhawks at home.

Friday, a similar type of game took place in Colfax, and it involved another late-game rally by the Raiders.

Colfax-Mingo led by eight points with 4:21 to play in the game before a 13-0 run by CMB allowed the Raiders to steal a win on Tigerhawk senior night, 45-40.

“It was a crazy game,” CMB coach Eric Padget said. “We were kind of surprised we were up at the end I think. We were not surprised to win because we worked hard. It was just weird.”

The Tigerhawks led by three after one and then trailed by two at the break. They grabbed an advantage with a 14-7 third quarter, but CMB outscored Colfax-Mingo, 13-3, in the fourth to steal the win.

“When we get aggressive, the shots seem to go in for us,” Padget said. “We just reminded the girls to just be aggressive. We kind of stalled in the third quarter, and I am not sure where that came from.”

Like in the first game, both teams competed hard despite playing with few wins on the season. The two teams combined for just five total wins and little to play for.

“I knew it would be a dogfight,” Padget said. “There was a lot of heart shown on both sides tonight.”

Colfax-Mingo led 12-6 in the first quarter following back-to-back 3-pointers by senior Brooke Berkey and sophomore Brooke Talsma. CMB sophomore Emmeline Huffaker answered the triples with a 3 of her own to make it 12-9 after one.

It was a nip and tuck second quarter with the lead changing hands three times. Both teams got into the bonus early as 13 of the final 17 points were scored at the foul line.

Five straight points by CMB — a Huffaker bank and an Abby Maher triple — to start the third quarter pushed the Raiders’ lead to seven.

The lead was short-lived, however. The Tigerhawks got the lead back following a 12-0 run. Berkey and junior Danielle Beals led the run with four points each. Colfax-Mingo led by five heading into the fourth.
