IOWA CITY — One day after starting guard Anthony Tucker was suspended for another alcohol-related incident, sophomore classmate Matt Gatens and three other Iowa players scored in double-figures during an 82-69 win over South Carolina State at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

Gatens, a sophomore, scored 20 points, delivered eight assists and had five rebounds as Iowa (5-7) won its second straight game at home.

Senior Jarryd Cole added 19 points and five rebounds, freshman Eric May had 18 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Aaron Fuller pitched in 12 points.

The Hawks held a 10-point advantage from the foul line and shot 57 percent from the floor. They led 46-30 at halftime, scored 13 second-chance points and went by as many as 20 points early in the second half.

Iowa head coach Todd Lickliter was on the bench for his second straight game after major surgery last week. He is 2-0 since his return.

Tucker, the team’s second leading scorer, was suspended indefinitely after his incident following Iowa’s win over Drake this past Saturday morning. Gatens is Tucker’s roommate and has said that the sophomore guard wants to return to the team despite rumors that he may transfer.

Lickliter did not say whether or not Tucker would be dismissed or how long the suspension would last.

Tucker’s suspension was automatic according to Iowa’s Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.

This was his second Category II Misconduct violation.

He would be automatically dismissed from the team after a third violation.

Iowa DE Clayborn

decides to stay in school

IOWA CITY — He said he loves Iowa and the decision on the National Football League can wait another year.

That came from Iowa junior defensive end Adrian Clayborn on Monday as the star player announced he would return for his senior season.

Clayborn is one of three Hawks who could have jumped to the National Fotball League early.

Junior OT Bryan Bulaga and junior cornerback Amari Spievey both have not made up their minds yet.

The 6-foot-3, 282-pound St. Louis native collected 9.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and recovered four fumbles.
