The Salvation Army thanked the community of Jasper County for the support given this season in a report issued Friday.

Captain Ron Cook reported that as of Friday, the Salvation Army had received approximately $48,000 in the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign.

That total is part of the $115,000 goal for this campaign, which runs from October 2009 through September 30, 2010.

The funding is kept locally and used to assist in senior and youth outreaches, loan closet, rental, utility, food, disaster and emergency needs.

The need has increased greatly from previous years, according to the Salvation Army, whose Thanksgiving and Christmas distribution served more than 2,000 people this year.

All donations are tax deductible for 2009 if made before Dec. 31, 2009. They can be delivered or mailed to The Salvation Army at 301 N. Second Ave. E., Newton, Iowa, 50208.
