Iowa men, women rally past Bulldogs at Carver

IOWA CITY — Both Drake basketball programs had halftime leads on Iowa this weekend. Neither team could hold on for the win.

Iowa’s mens team rallied from a one-point halftime deficit to dump Drake, 71-67, on Saturday, while the Iowa women trailed by five at the break before winning, 73-61.

In the men’s game, Drake and Iowa combined to hit 23 3-pointers.

Iowa sophomore Matt Gatens had 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists to lead the Hawks, who are now 4-7 on the season. Sophomore Anthony Tucker added 17 points and freshman Eric May pitched in 13 points in Iowa coach Todd Lickliter’s return from major surgery.

Drake freshman Seth VanDeest and senior Josh Young combined to score 15 and 13 points, respectively. Young also missed out on being the only player in Drake history to beat Iowa four straight times.

After the game, Tucker was arrested for public intoxication. It was the second time Tucker has been arrested for an alcohol -related incident. He has been suspended indefinitely.

Freshman Jaime Printy had 22 points, four rebounds and four assists to lead the Iowa women past Drake. The Hawks (6-5) outscored the Bulldogs (6-3) 48-31 in the second half.

Drake stayed in the game by hitting 11-of-22 from long range. Amber Wollschlager hit five of those triples and finished with 19 points. Monique Jones also had 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.
