Aces Teen Center Concert
On Saturday night, local band Gracious Defeat will headline a rock concert at 7 p.m. at Aces Teen Center and everyone is invited to attend. Gracious Defeat — consisting of Newton Senior High School students Trenton Ratcliff, Curtis Jackson, Nick Pletcher and John Fehr — write their own music and play covers of famous alternative artists.
QCLB, Hanwell and solo act Jordan L. Leckband are also slated to perform. Cost for the concert is $5 and tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling 521-6908 or 831-2463.

Newton Basketball at NHS Gym
The Newton varsity basketball teams will each have a chance to win two straight games this weekend when the Cardinals travel to Oskaloosa on Friday and host Winterset on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday’s girls game begins at 3 p.m. and features Newton’s 2-6 record, while the Huskies have balanced scoring and have begun the season 0-4. The boys game tips off after the girls game or around 4:45. The Cardinal boys are 1-4, while Winterset is 1-3 and coming off a win against Perry. The Husky boys are led by Jackson Sawyer and J.D. Nielsen, who both average around 11 points per game.

Sundays at Four
The First Presbyterian Church will host a concert of Christmas music at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, located at 220 N. Second Ave. E. in Newton, as part of its Sundays at Four series.
The concert will feature musicians from the church and friends as they present vocal and instrumental renditions of classic Christmas melodies. A reception will follow the performance. The event is free and open to the public.

With a slight chance of snow and a high of about 30, Sunday afternoon might be the perfect time to head over to Sunset Park for a little bit of sledding. While Old Man Winter’s nasty snowstorm earlier this month might not have been appreciated by most Iowans, sledding enthusiasts know that round of weather makes for a good snow base for sliding.
